Make Sure Your Do-It-Yourself Documents Are Notarized Properly

Today, I was down at the County Recorder's Office in Norwalk where I saw some very frustrated and confused people being turned away. 

They had waited in a slow moving line to present their documents, deeds, etc., to be recorded.  The documents were notarized.  But in each case, the Acknowledgment - that language that appears before the notary's signature & seal - did not comply with the changes in the law that went into effect on January 1, 2008.

There was nothing they could do but leave and have the documents notarized properly. 


Of course, the notary public should have noticed the outdated language, too.  Hopefully, the rejections don't cause any greater problems.

I have often wondered how many documents were being rejected since the change in the law. But since I typically use a service to handle the recordings, I didn't have the first-hand experience until today.  The young man who helped me indicated that what I saw was pretty common.
